Wandering the wild woods of Yorokeikoku

Going down to Yorokeikoku involves taking an old single-carriage train through the countryside stopping at tiny stations that look like garden sheds with picket fences and hanging baskets

We day-tripped to the countryside with Dan and Dora...

A redundant vender out in the sticks

A clothed-shrine in a small cave by the side of the road

The boys investigate the steep steps down to the river

It reminded me of Wales

There were a series of crossings across the river in this style of stepping blocks

Dan and I trying to figure out from our basic walking maps (written in Japanese) which way to go. An old man on a scooter tried to give us instructions but spoke incredibly quickly and neither Dan or I could pick out any words that he said and just had to politely nod. He kept on mentioning the name of a place so we tried to remember that to help if we saw it on a sign
His directions led us through a long tunnel through a hill, there were wild monkeys up in the trees on the other side

I saw a sign written in hiragana (one of the Japanese alphabets) that had the name that our old man had mentioned, so we decided to follow it. It went down to the river...
and across a bridge...
and then to what looked like a summer campsite, but was entirely abandoned
It would be a lie if we didn't think that it sounded like the start of some Japanese horror-film...two couples go for a walk in the countryside but get more than they bargained for...

It was actually fine but for a good 3o minutes we were far away from anyone and anything and hoping that our sense of direction had been correct. Thankfully it was, and we joined the road where we had expected. We were relieved when Jack's phone rang whilst we were in the wilderness as it indicated that we couldn't be that far from civilisation if Jack could get reception!

Once we were back at the station and waiting for the hourly train, we played with the station cats. There were two adult cats wandering about saying hello, and then two kittens appeared, they were incredible cute little tabbies

Epic bike ride

The number of pictures does not reflect the length of this ride - we cycled to one of the schools that we work at that is approx. a 20 minute train ride away. Without the benefit of Google maps to check en route or clear signage, we went a bit off-track and ended up taking 3 hours to get there. It wasn't unpleasant though, it was a beautifully sunny day and we were cycling through some countryside. We came across this little river where children were trying to fish

When we eventually arrived at Toke, Minori (the school manager) was incredibly surprised to see that we'd cycled and also found it hilarious that it took us soooooo long to get there!
She wrote us a note to hand to the staff at the train station asking if we could take our bikes on the train rather than cycling back, but without being able to disassemble our bikes and having bike-covers, it was a no-go. Denied! Thankfully, we travelled back along the correct road and got home in an hour, much to our relief

Take me out to the ballgame...

Chiba Lotte Marines, our local team

The chanting was pretty impressive from both sets of supporters. They were also incredibly civilised and only cheering when their own team was batting

Sadly, the Marines are not having a good season. They only managed to score 1 home-run in the entirety of the game (which lasted 3 hours!)

Jack was especially delighted with the experience as there were beer girls

Chu-hi girls (chu-hi's like an alco-pop/hooch type drink)

Pizza girls too

It was a bit ridiculous and decadent when they brought the pitcher out in this doorless car

The banner says it all...

Post-blustery-BBQ-bowling

Yet another pair of fantastic bowling shoes

Ryota was the best bolwer among us, Mari was definitely the cutest

Mark didn't show too much skill at bowling, but then again, I don't he'd been to bed on Saturday night so was doing well to just stay awake!

This was probably the best score I've ever gotten. Please draw attention to the top line...that's right, 1 spare and 3 strikes in my last few bowls. Dumb luck!
